Weather & Climate in Naxos Greece – What to expect throughout the year

Aug 19th, 2019

With warm summers and mild winters, at least most of the times, the weather in Naxos indeed follows the typical pattern of the Mediterranean climate, making the Cycladic island particularly appealing year-round. Below is a breakdown of all the seasons as they are experienced at Naxos for your reference.

Spring (late March – late June)

In very rare occasions, the month of March mat bring winter elements, with a bit of cold and heavy rain. However, the climate here is pleasant with just a few showers every now and then usually along the coastline. Inland, though, is a different story, since villages like Apeiranthos, Koronos, Moni, and Filoti, which enjoy higher altitudes also get more rain and significantly lower temperatures. But, overall, any bad weather (if at all) is very short-lived during spring.

Summer (late June – Late August)

The weather in Naxos is getting warmer by the day, and there are definitely many more things to do in Naxos, Greece then (compared to the other seasons), including watersports, hiking, trekking, scuba diving, and Yoga. Being a Cycladic island, Naxos also bears strong northern winds called the Etesians or Meltemia, which keep Naxos fairly cool, preventing the scorching temperatures of the rest of Greece from whipping the island. Don’t worry about the sometimes windy weather, though, The vast majority of Naxos hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, and streets are well protected from the wind. However, you may need to pack a sweatshirt or light jacket because chances are you will need it in the evening when the Meltemia blow. Of course, for windsurfers and kite surfers, this is heaven!

Winter (December – February)

The wintertime here is the coldest of all seasons but certainly much more temperate than other Greek regions. Therefore, the weather in Naxos is relatively mild even in the winter months, which explains why many locals don’t have heating installed in their homes. For winter swimmers, who just can’t have enough of the sunny days and the crystal clear waters, the sea remains attractive.
