Sightseeing & Attractions

Naxos Town

Naxos is like Greece in a nutshell, where you can experience from mythology and ancient civilization to wild flowers and breathtaking seascapes, all on one exceptional island. Naxos island is big enough to have the highest mountain in the Cyclades (mount Zas), olive groves, green valleys with small rivers and of course the best palette of secluded beaches.

Naxos is a fertile island with a unique landscape which has not been destroyed by tourism. It has a great past but also a lively present that makes it a unique place to visit at any time of the year.

Thanks to its rich history, Naxos island offers an abundance of historical sites. While in Naxos town we suggest you visit the Portara, the gate to the Temple of Apollo which is the island’s trademark and the Sanctuary of Dionysus. While in the old town, you should wander through the winding alleys of the 13th century Venetian castle and not miss a visit to the Archaeological museum. In nearby Grotta area you will witness the remains of the prehistoric Mycenaean town.

Naxos Villages

Apart from the town, there are significant sights worth visiting, in the mainland of Naxos. Ask at the reception for a car or motorcycle rental. In Apiranthos village there are five museums (Archaeological, Geological, Folklore, Natural History and Visual Arts museum). In Sangri the renovated sanctuary of Demeter surrounded by towers and windmills, the Cave of Zas on the homonymous mountain and the ancient tower of Chimarros in Filoti, the Kouros in Apollonas (10.45m) and Melanes (6m) and the tiny byzantine church of Panagia Drossiani with its unique frescoes should all be in your “must-see” list.

Naxos beaches

Naxos island has some of the most beautiful beaches that can satisfy every visitor. Apart from Agios Georgios, the beaches of Agia Anna, Plaka and Agios Prokopios are the closest to Naxos town (6 km) and offer azure water and white sand. Other beaches like Lagouna and Mikri Vigla are ideal for windsurfing and kite as the wind there is ideal for those sports. For those who seek quiet and secluded beaches, Aliko, Kastraki and Pirgaki are an ideal choice.
